Bird’s Own Country: Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

In a city life we rarely see beautiful feathered and coloured birds,mostly birds are sheltered in a forested area which provides good feeding and accommodation facilities for them from the dangers of severe hot radiation and industrial pollution. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in Kerala is such a lovely place for watching rare species of Indian birds like cuckoo, hornbill, green pigeon, bulbuls etc. For ornithologist Kerala is a bird’s Own country where many migratory birds and special birds visiting Kerala’s green natural hubs isolated from city traffics.

About Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Thattekad  is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala described by Dr. Salim Ali, the accomplished ornithologist as the ‘richest bird habitat of peninsular India’. It is a lowland evergreen forest covering an area of 25 km square, located between the tributaries of the Periyar River. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of birds. The following are some of the birds found here:

The Thattekad sanctuary is a habitat for different varieties of cuckoos and a region of the sanctuary popularly called “Cuckoo Paradise” is home to them.

How to Reach Thattekad?

The bird sanctuary is 13 Km North- East of Kothamangalam along the pooyamkutty road. The nearest Airport is Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery which is 71 Km distance from Thattekad and nearest railway station is Aluva Railway station located at a distance of 48 Km. You can reach to Kothamangalam through always connecting private and public buses through Muvattupuzha and Perumbavoor. And there are frequent buses from Kothamangalam to Thattekad.


The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is also called Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary ,named to honour the great Indian Ornithologist  Dr Salim Ali. There is PWD Guest house and hotel facilities near Kothamangalam for Thattekad visitors. Some of the resorts in kochi, also  provided accommodation facilities for  tourists visiting Thattekad.
